Sutherland Qualifies Fourth in LMPC
Friday at Mazda Raceway
For Sat.'s American Le Mans Series Race
SALINAS, Calif., May 21 - Genoa Racing's Tom Sutherland of Los Gatos,
Calif. qualified fourth in the LMPC class and tenth overall Friday
afternoon at
Mazda Raceway in preparation for Saturday's third event of the year in the
American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron.
The Zionsville, Ind.-based team is hoping for its third podium finish in as
many races in tomorrow's six-hour race, which starts at 2:30 p.m. local
time.
Driving the bright red No. 36 that is sponsored in part by ClickAway,
Sutherland's 11th of the 11 laps he turned in the 20-minute qualifying
session
was timed in 1:18:256 for an average speed of 102.954 miles per hour for
the
2.238-mile, 11-turn road course. The Texas Christian University student's
best lap was just 0.044 of a second slower than the one posted by the
third-fastest driver in the class and just 0.456 of a second off the class
pole.
Three drivers will share the driving duties for the team in Saturday's
race, which will be broadcast at 1:30 p.m. Eastern time May 29 on CBS.
Kyle
Marcelli of Barrie, Ontario, who is making his first start with the team,
will
take the green flag. Sutherland will drive in the middle portion of the
race. Tom Weickardt of Whitefish Bay, Wis., who is also driving for Genoa
Racing
for the first time this weekend, is scheduled to bring the car home at the
finish.
Marcelli and Sutherland are the youngest drivers in the race. Marcelli is
20, while Sutherland just turned 21.
Sutherland called the qualifying run "a good team effort.
"We missed a little on our tire pressures, but our Michelin tires were very
consistent," he said. "I think this is the best tire compound we've had to
choose from so far this year; it is well suited to this track.
"I'm pretty pleased with how I drove; I thought it was a good, solid effort
and our fastest lap was just four-tenths off the pole, so we're getting
better," he added. "We just need a little more to get a pole."
Some of the drivers complained of dust and debris on the track that was
exasperated by wind, but Sutherland had no complaints.
"The Corkscrew was a little dirty, but not like it's going to be in the
race," he said.
Live, on-line video streaming of the entire six-hour race by TodoCast.tv is
planned for the series' Web site at americanlemans.com. Live timing and
scoring is planned for imsaracing.net. More information on Sutherland can
